I am a huge, huge fan of Aly Martinez's. I love all her books HARD. As I began The Truth About Lies (Book 2 in the series will be coming soon! Ekkkk!) I was a little surprised. Most of her characters have suffered some type of life-changing or life-altering event but I was even surprised by the life that the main character Cora leads. Cora's lived a hard life already but she just keeps on surviving; it's the only ways she knows. She loves her "girls" with everything in her soul and tries to protect them by giving herself up as collateral.
When Penn's character is first introduced, well, I can and will say about his life-altering event is just that I am amazed that he is still half-way functioning. No person should ever have to go through what this 37 year old man has already.
Cora and Penn are brought together in a very unexpected way that the reader does not begin to put together until about half-way through the book.
The Truth About Lies is emotional, heart-wrenching and tough reading but Aly manages to bring all these things together and still write an amazing story. I absolutely can't wait to read the next book in the Duet series.
