Sometimes a single flame can ignite a love that lasts a lifetime.
Milo Phillips knows the meaning of pain. Suffering through the most intense physical agony of his life, he’s confined to a hospital bed to bear it alone. More than once, he wishes he’d died in the explosion that melted and mangled his skin. Darkness consumes him, snuffing all the joy in his life and leaving an empty hole in its place.
But one day, a flicker of light sneaks into his hospital room, driving away some of the hopelessness. For the first time in months, pain isn’t all he feels.
The flicker’s name is Sara Foster, his new nurse. Milo just hopes that Sara can see past his scars. Because underneath, his heart has begun beating again just for her.

The Candle Palace is a novella that tells the story of how Sara and Milo first met and fell in love. The story is Sara explaining to her friends how her and Milo met and why Milo is upset that Sara's mom is coming to visit the baby.
Milo is a police officer but has been badly burned while working a case (if you have read any of the Jamison Valley books, Milo is mentioned as well as what exactly happened to causes his burns). He ends up bitter and mad at the world in a burn unit which happens to be where Sara works. Over the course of Milo's treatment, Milo begins to overcome being mad at the world for the situation he is currently in and he and Sara become friends. Their chemistry is off the charts and even though she tries to fight it, Sara finds herself falling in love with Milo. Milo makes Sara feel beautiful, special, and like the only woman in the world (as women should be treated). Even though Milo claims he is not a catch and that no one from home has even batted an eye in his direction, Sara can't believe how lucky she is to have caught his eye. After problems arise at work, Sara must make a decision to take a chance on love and move with Milo back to his home.
This was a sweet love story...but Devney's writing makes it more than that. I feel in love with Milo as the same time Sara was. The story was heartfelt, touching, and a must-read for any Devney fan. ***The Candle Palace can be read as a stand-alone.
